If you’re visiting Madrid and want to stay active, there’s no better way than joining the local runners at the Casa de Campo Parkrun. This free, community-organized 5 km event happens every Saturday morning and welcomes everyone — from complete beginners to serious athletes. It’s one of the most scenic runs in Europe’s capital cities, set inside Madrid’s largest green park with lakes, hills, and skyline views.

What is Parkrun?

Parkrun is a global running initiative that hosts timed 5 km events every Saturday in hundreds of cities around the world. They’re completely free, volunteer-run, and open to all fitness levels. You can jog, run, or even walk — the goal is participation, not competition.

Where it takes place

The Madrid Parkrun is held inside Casa de Campo, a vast 1,700-hectare park west of the city center — bigger than New York’s Central Park. The route runs on a combination of paved and gravel paths, mostly flat with a few gentle hills, and loops around the park’s lake (Lago de Casa de Campo).

  • Starting point: Near Lago Casa de Campo, just outside the Lago Metro station (Line 10).
  • Public transport: Take Metro Line 10 to Lago station — the start line is a 2-minute walk away. Alternatively, buses 33 and 36 stop nearby.
  • Parking: Free street parking is available around Paseo María Teresa and Paseo Puerta del Ángel.

When it happens

The event starts every Saturday at 9:00 a.m. sharp. It’s best to arrive around 8:40 a.m. for the short briefing and warm-up. The run usually finishes before 9:45 a.m., leaving you plenty of time for a post-run coffee at one of the park cafés.

Do you need to register?

Yes — once. Registration is free and takes less than two minutes on the official Parkrun website (parkrun.com.es). You’ll receive a personal barcode by email. Print or save it on your phone and bring it with you so your time can be recorded at the finish line. You can use the same barcode at any Parkrun event worldwide.

What to bring and expect

  • Comfortable running shoes — the terrain mixes dirt paths and asphalt.
  • Water — there are fountains nearby, but it’s best to carry your own in summer.
  • After-run coffee — most runners meet at the Cafetería El Ancla del Lago to chat and recover.
  • Weather tip — Madrid mornings can be chilly in winter and hot in summer, so dress accordingly.

Why you should join

Parkrun is more than just a 5 K — it’s a community. Whether you’re a traveler looking to stay fit or a local wanting a friendly routine, the Casa de Campo Parkrun offers motivation, camaraderie, and a great way to experience Madrid’s green heart. Plus, it’s completely free.

After your run, treat yourself to a healthy brunch in nearby La Latina or cool off at your hotel’s pool. And if you want to keep your fitness routine consistent during your trip, browse verified hotels with great gyms in Madrid on Good Gym Hotels.
