Low-Calorie Food in Mexico City You Should Try
Low-Calorie Food in Mexico City You Should Try
Mexico City has a reputation for heavy dishes — tacos, tortas, churros, everything fried and delicious. But if you’re trying to keep your calories under control while still enjoying the city, you’re in luck. Mexican cuisine has plenty of fresh, light options that taste amazing and won’t slow you down during your trip.
Ceviche
Fresh fish marinated in lime juice, mixed with coriander, onions and a bit of chili. It’s refreshing, low-fat, and packed with protein. You’ll find great ceviche in Roma Norte, Condesa and Polanco — perfect for lunch on a warm day.
Nopales (Grilled Cactus)
Nopales are a staple in Mexico. They’re low in calories, high in fiber and have a slightly tangy flavour. Grilled nopales with a bit of lime and salt are a must-try if you want something filling but light.
Pozole Verde (Light Version)
Pozole can be heavy, but the green version — especially when ordered with chicken instead of pork — is surprisingly lean. It’s a flavourful soup with hominy, herbs and shredded chicken. Skip the sour cream and crunchy toppings if you want to keep calories low.
Elote or Esquites (Without Mayo)
Mexican street corn can be calorie-loaded when covered in mayo and cheese. But if you ask for it sin mayonesa and light on the cheese, it instantly becomes a lighter snack. Still delicious, still very “CDMX”, just a bit more fitness-friendly.
Chicken Tinga
This shredded chicken cooked in tomatoes and chipotle is high in protein and relatively low in calories. Try it in a bowl or on tostadas — just watch the toppings and portion size. Great option when you want something satisfying without going overboard.
Fresh Fruit Cups
Street vendors sell fruit cups everywhere — pineapple, papaya, watermelon, jícama, cucumber. All low-calorie, refreshing and perfect when you’re walking around the historic center or Chapultepec Park. Add chili powder and lime for the full Mexican experience.
Aguachile
A spicier cousin of ceviche, usually made with shrimp. It’s light, almost no added fat, and packed with flavour. Great option if you want something cold, clean and high-protein.
Unsweetened Aguas Frescas
Aguas frescas can be sugar bombs, but almost every vendor will prepare one for you with less sugar or without sugar at all (sin azúcar). Horchata, jamaica and tamarindo are refreshing without the extra calories.
Keep your routine on track
Mexico City has endless food temptations, but eating healthy while traveling doesn’t have to be complicated. Choose fresh ingredients, avoid deep-fried options, and drink plenty of water — the altitude makes you thirsty faster than you expect.
